It’s hard not to like humpbacks. They are the rock stars of the whale world. They sing, they dance, are tolerant of boats, they are gregarious and friendly. These acrobatic giants are plentiful in Monterey from April to November. Common behaviors are breaches, tail and pectoral slaps and lunge feeding. They are mostly seen in loose social pairs, or mother-calf pairs.
Most commercial humpback images are taken in Hawaii or inland waters in Alaska. These images, mostly from Monterey Bay, are shot in much rougher conditions, as you can tell by looking at the ocean.
